What does the Ipod touch dock adapter do and what it is for?

I just looked it up on apple.com and found out what this little white piece of something that is called "dock adapter". Its one of the things that comes in the box of an ipod touch. It has space to fit your charger in the bottom, but it doesn’t stand up on its own. What is this thing?
