What do the buttons on the bottom of the remote to the apple universal dock do?

One button makes up the bottom of the remote, it looks like a long oval.
There is another button that is to the right within the long oval button, resembling a small indented circle.
I’ve pushed them in but I have no idea what they do. Help!
