How do I fix "invalid format" error on my lg tv?

I just bought an Apple Universal docking station to connect my iPod to my tv. I have and LG HDTV. Every time I try to use it I get an "invalid format" message on my tv. I have sound through my surround sound, but no picture except for that message. The docking station connects through a vga cable (with the red, green, and blue plugs). I have been scavenging through forum after forum, but no one seems to have an answer. Please help!
