How do companies make 3rd party accessories that dock with an iPod if there is no available API / SDK?
How did the Nike+ product integrate with the iPod and change its menu. Are there other 3rd party companies that do similar things, like the recording add-on? Did they need Apple’s permission? Does Apple help these companies at all. I would like to make a peripheral that attaches to the iPod what should I look into?

Nike and Apple cooperated to their own mutual advantage.
