Just got a new usb cord for my ipod and two came in the little box. A short and long one. I would like to know what is the short one is for and why my computer wont recognize the ipod. how to fix or restore the ipod? Any help appreciated.

I tried to make a small incision to my iPod Dock so that it would comfortably fit my iPod Touch, and ended up making a split straight down the middle of the cover screen, which is glass.
